About Us

Galway Ultrasound Specialists is a dedicated ultrasound clinic located in Galway Technology Park on the east side of Galway city. We are committed to providing exceptional patient care and accurate diagnostic imaging in a timely manner. 

Our scanning service is provided by 3 Galway based Clinical Ultrasound Specialists with over 40 years combined postgraduate ultrasound experience. All are state registered with CORU and members of the Irish Institute of Radiography. 

We provide a diagnostic medical ultrasound imaging service to include all body parts along with early pregnancy and obstetric scanning. Indeed, we are the only ultrasound clinic in Galway to offer this combined service.

Our scans are carried out on the latest and most sophisticated equipment including the GE Voluson machine which is equipped with 3D/4D imaging technology.

Edel Varden

DCR, PgDip

Edel studied at Charterhouse College London and qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer in 1993. She went onto pursue her interest in medical and obstetric ultrasound and gained her postgraduate diploma in ultrasound from Southbank University London in 1997.

Edel has worked in numerous large teaching hospitals in the NHS and HSE, including The Royal Free Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital London, Princess Royal University Hospital Kent, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin, The Galway Clinic and University Hospital Galway. She has also worked as a Research Radiographer for Perinatal Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons.

She currently works as a Clinical Specialist Radiographer at University Hospital Galway. Special interests include obstetrics and gynaecological ultrasound.

Trish McGinty

MSc, PgD, BSc

Trish graduated with an honours degree in Radiography from University College Dublin in 2005. She completed her Postgraduate Diploma (2009) and Master’s Degree in Ultrasound (2012) at the University of Ulster. Her clinical training was completed at St James’s University Hospital, Dublin.

Trish has ultrasound experience both in Ireland and Australia. She held Clinical Specialist positions at The Coombe Womens and Infants University Hospital, Dublin and currently works as a Clinical Specialist Radiographer at the obstetrics department of University Hospital Galway.

Trish has published research in ultrasound and regularly lectures at conferences and guest lectures on the MSc Ultrasound course at  University College Dublin.

Her special interests include obstetrics and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Dr Derek Lohan

Consultant Radiologist

MBBChBAO, MRCSI, FFR(RCSI)

Dr Derek Lohan is a graduate of NUI, Galway (1999) and the Faculty of Radiologists, RCSI (2006). He underwent subspecialty Fellowship training in Diagnostic Cardiovascular Imaging and Musculoskeletal Imaging at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr Lohan worked at UCLA until his return to Ireland in 2009. He has since worked as a Consultant Radiologist in both public and private hospitals.

Yvonne Doyle

Clinic Coordinator/Customer Service

Yvonne will usually be your first point of contact when you call or attend the clinic. She has a strong knowledge in all aspects of ultrasound scans. Her empathetic caring nature along with her experience in customer service enhances all our patients experience at the clinic and helps our patients feel at ease. Yvonne is very passionate about providing excellent patient care and will go the extra mile to ensure all patients are happy.

Dr. Brian Lucey

Consultant Radiologist

Dr Lucey is a graduate of NUI, Cork (1993) and of the Faculty of Radiology, RCSI (2000). He underwent a two-year sub specialty Fellowship training in Abdominal Imaging and Interventional Radiology, including vascular imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston followed by a Fellowship in Body Imaging at Boston University Medical Centre (BUMC) including women's imaging and musculoskeletal imaging.  Following this Dr Lucey was an attending staff radiologist at BUMC and went on to become Section Head of Body Imaging at BUMC.  From there he moved to the Boston VA Healthcare System where he became Acting Chief of the Radiology Service until he returned to Ireland in 2008.
